royal blue

/ˈrɔɪ(ə)l ˌblu/
/ˈrɔɪəl blu/
IPA guide

Other forms: royal blues

Royal blue is a vibrant color, a deep, bold shade that's nearly (but not quite) purple. Many sports teams use royal blue as an official color, including the Dallas Cowboys and the Golden State Warriors.

The vivid hue of royal blue was developed by an English mill in the 17th century after King George III issued a challenge to come up with a dye color "suitable for royalty." Royal blue is especially popular in sports — the Kansas City Royals, New York Rangers, and Melbourne Football Club all use it as part of their team colors. It was also chosen for U.S. Transportation Security Administration uniforms after tests showed royal blue was perceived as conveying authority.
